If you want to make prong settings that are sized to fit a stone and can be embedded in your metal clay work, cut your prongs a few millimeters longer than necessary and push them all the way through their pad. Let the assembly dry fully, then fire, nestled in vermiculite. After firing, tumble the prong setting for several hours or overnight. The portions of the prongs that stick out of the bottom of the setting can be used as embeds in another fresh pad of clay. This will allow you to assure the finished size of the setting before it’s fired into your piece, as an already fired setting will not shrink again in a second firing.
